Baselworld 2015: Rolex Day-Date 40 Watch And New 3255 Movement

By Jovan Krstevski

To all of us watch fanatics, Rolex means business and if you don’t know the name, you can’t play the game. Most of us admire the prestige of Rolex and only a fool will go against this gargantuan watch company. In time with Baselworld 2015, the new iteration of the Rolex Day-Date and the release of the latest Rolex 3255 Movement fills the gap between timelessness and stunning engineering. Honestly, I can’t help being excited by the new features of the watch considering that the company practically considers it as one of their greatest releases. This is the kind of watch that many leaders use simply because of its elegance and classic looks. For now, there are four additions to the Rolex Day-Date 40 Watches collection; 18k yellow gold, 18k White gold, Everose gold, and 950 platinum. They all come with the same bracelets conforming with the unique designs.

I like the case particularly the white gold variant. It’s simply refreshing to look at and with its smooth finish, you’ll somehow think that the bracelet have been precisely machined with the lugs. Well, they’re not but you’ll be fascinated with its adoption of ceramic inserts to hold the links of the bracelet that prevents it from stretching. With the Rolex, the bracelet simply becomes a very important aspect of the watch, after all it symbolizes prestige and elegance. I mentioned the ceramic inserts because they are less malleable compared with metal, hence over time the bracelet feels as if it’s brand new. The bezel also looks very elegant on all versions and the crown holds the same Rolex branding on the side.

I also like the dial that comes with various patterns and indices. The patterns are laser etched with uniformed sunray finish yielding sharper and highly accurate lines. The indices are remarkably precise and the letterings are highly readable too. Everything inside the dial is a work of art. The calendar function is perfectly positioned at the 3 o’clock while the day of the week is placed at the 12 o’clock. If you’re like me, the first thing you’ll think is why replace the traditional reference marker or the big 12 o’clock? Rolex somehow thinks it’s better to give you the day, but for me this is a bit odd.

The new Rolex 3255 in-house movement

Where the watch truly shines is with its new Rolex 3255 Movement. It features the new innovation called Chronergy escapement that simply allows it to manage power more efficiently. This escapement is also made of nickel-phosphorous which gives it an anti-magnetic property. According to the company, they just tweaked the size and shape of the escape wheel, the pallet fork, and the pallet jewels but for me, there are more things involve here. Of course, it’s business so the competitors should figure out how to deal with their own engineering techniques. Overall, with the new modification to an already outstanding movement, you get not only an extended power reserve (approximately 70 hours) but an extreme precision too.
