Introducing The Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer Limited Edition Watch

BY JOVAN KRSTEVSKI

German brand Glashütte Original is well-known for making high-quality elegant timepieces that showcase the best of German watchmaking, and the brand’s Senator watches are a testimony to this. The latest addition to the Senator family comes in the form of the Senator Chronometer Limited Edition. This watch features a textured white gold dial along with a newly designed white gold case and pays a tribute to historic marine chronometers.

Legibility and precision were two important aspects of marine chronometer clocks, and the Glashütte Senator excels at both. Like many previous versions of the Senator, the dial on this latest iteration is clean and refined, showcasing a heavy marine clock influence. Classic Roman numerals, a railroad-style minute track, a power reserve indicator at 12, a large seconds sub-dial at 6, a big date display at 3 and beautiful thermally blued hands, all combine to create a face that is elegant and easily readable even at a glance. But this limited edition does have a few special tricks up its sleeves. First and foremost, the dial is made from solid gold. Second and more noteworthy is the beautiful textured finish, that is achieved using an elaborate multi-step process that includes engraving, filling black lacquer and firing the dial in a kiln, and finally hand brushing a mixture of silver powder, salt, and water to get an even fine shimmer throughout.

Like the dial, the case on this watch has been crafted from solid white gold. It measures 42mm in diameter and has a thickness of around 12.5mm and is water-resistant to 50 meters. One special highlight of the case is the concave bezel that is inspired by the shape of historic marine chronometers. The bezel also features fine knurling on the sides that adds to the visual appeal of the watch.

Driving the watch is Glashütte Original’s in-house Caliber 58-03. This is a hand-wound movement that has been specially given a galvanic rose gold treatment for this limited-edition timepiece. It operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of around 45 hours when fully wound. It is also a certified German Chronometer which implies that the watch would always highly accurate time. The movement can be viewed through the sapphire case back and has been beautifully decorated using beveled/polished edges, polished steel parts, blued screws, and much more.

The new Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer Limited Edition (Reference 1-58-03-01-04-30) would be limited to just 25 pieces and would come attached to a dark blue Louisiana alligator strap. The retail price has been set at EUR 26,710.
