Less than a year after discontinuing its collector-favorite Balancier Contemporain, Greubel Forsey has brought back its core time-only silhouette with a massive structural and philosophical statement. Enter the Balancier QM. While the brand has recently leaned into highly technical, sporty, and curved carbon models like the Convexe series, the Balancier QM represents a deliberate return to the ultra-traditional, classically proportioned watchmaking that defined the brand’s early identity.
The core mission of this watch isn’t just to tell the time; it is to introduce and codify the brand’s stringent new Qualité Musée (QM) internal finishing standard.
While high-end watchmaking is littered with traditional quality seals such as the Patek Philippe Seal, the Hallmark of Geneva, or the Qualité Fleurier, Greubel Forsey’s self-imposed QM benchmark focuses strictly on pushing manual manipulation to an absolute extreme. Hand-finishing has been a hallmark of the Atelier since its 2004 founding by Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey, but the QM standard formally structures these techniques through a dedicated research wing inside the brand’s Experimental Watch Technology Laboratory.
To look closely at the dial of the Balancier QM is to see a masterclass in varied surface texturing. The open balance arm alone features seven distinct hand-applied treatments:
- Rocking to round the profile to a flawless mirror polish
- A pure black-polished flat surface at the jewel end
- Intricate spotting and internal circular graining
- Hand-polishing across the visible flanks
- Uniform straight graining across structural edges
- Extra-large, completely flawless 0.40mm hand-cut bevels (anglage)
For purists who felt the brand’s newer sports models had grown too massive, the Balancier QM marks a triumphant return to traditional sizing. It utilizes a round 18k white gold case measuring a highly wearable 39.6mm x 12.25mm.

The dial is a multi-level architectural theater crafted in rhodium-colored solid gold. It features an asymmetrical layout with a raised, eccentric chapter ring for the hours and minutes, navigated by flame-blued steel hands. Just below, an intricately engraved mainspring barrel is paired with a redesigned, floating “mysterious” power reserve indicator arc. The left side of the layout remains open, dominated entirely by an expansive 12.6mm in-house variable-inertia balance wheel that hovers majestically above a flat, black-polished gold plate that reflects the escapement like a pristine mirror.
Flipping the watch over reveals the manual-winding Caliber GF09 movement. Comprising 298 meticulously finished parts and 34 olive-domed jewels set securely inside solid gold chatons, the movement operates at a traditional frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz).
Power delivery is managed by two coaxial, series-coupled, fast-rotating barrels completing one full rotation every 3.2 hours, providing a stable 72-hour power reserve. To protect the delicate hand-crafted components from modern wear, one of the mainspring barrels is thoughtfully equipped with a slipping spring to prevent excessive tension during manual winding.
Limited to only 33 pieces, the Greubel Forsey Balancier QM is officially priced at CHF 265,000 before taxes. Given the extreme constraints of its production and the introduction of the historic QM standard, this reference represents a monumental piece of modern horological art intended for the world’s most dedicated independent watchmaking collectors.
