Introducing: Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Dusk ‘Série Atelier’

Laurent Ferrier brings warm 18k yellow gold and an artisan obsidian moonphase to its iconic annual calendar to capture the fleeting moments of twilight.

When Laurent Ferrier introduced the Classic Moon back in 2024, it marked the independent brand’s very first moonphase complication, debuting in steel and 18k rose gold silver/blue configurations. Fast forward to today, and the maison is expanding its direct-to-consumer Série Atelier line-up with the new Classic Moon Dusk (Ref. LCF039.J2.BW1).

Everything starts with the signature “Galet” pebble-shaped case, which takes its design cues from smooth 19th-century pocket watches. Measuring 40mm x 12.9mm, it marks the first time the Classic Moon has been rendered in 18k 2N yellow gold.

The fluid lines run into the curved lugs, flanked by the brand’s instantly recognizable ball-shaped crown. Adjustments are kept clean and functional: the main crown handles winding, time-setting, and date corrections, while discreet push-correctors sit flush along the case flank at 10 o’clock for the day and between 8 and 9 o’clock for the moonphase. Naturally, sapphire crystals sit up front and out back, with water resistance rated at 30 meters.

The dial is where the “Dusk” theme really comes alive. It features a soft opaline finish with a fumé gradient that transitions from a light taupe center out to a rich chocolate brown edge. Transferred white Roman numerals and baton indices handle the hour track, framed by a lighter taupe minute track. At 12 o’clock, twin beveled windows feature chocolate discs displaying the day and month in crisp white text. Around the outer edge sits a vintage-inspired date scale in pale yellow, complete with an ochre-colored “31” pointing to the end of the month via a polished yellow gold central hand. To keep legibility high against the dark backdrop, the iconic Assegai-shaped hour and minute hands are white gold painted in stark white.

The star show on the dial sits at 6 o’clock inside the small seconds counter: a moonphase indicator crafted from a disc of gold-sheen obsidian. This natural black stone reveals subtle green, brown, and gold reflections, engraved with moons and stars that are hand-painted with white Super-LumiNova and fired at high temperatures. Covering the subdial is a translucent, anise-yellow plique-à-jour enamel moon bridge, allowing light to pass through so the bridge appears to float.

Ticking inside is the hand-wound, in-house Calibre LF126.02, beating at 21,600 vph (3Hz) with a generous 80-hour power reserve. This annual calendar automatically accounts for 30- and 31-day months, meaning you only need to adjust it once a year on March 1st.

Flip the watch over, and the sapphire caseback reveals traditional hand-finishing rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève, mirror-polished screw heads, hand-beveled edges alongside a rear-facing power reserve indicator and a classic long-blade click mechanism that provides that satisfying, tactile click when winding.

The watch comes paired with a hand-stitched mocha nubuck leather strap lined with tone-on-tone Alcantara, securing to the wrist with a matching 18k yellow gold pin buckle. Limited to just 20 pieces worldwide as part of the exclusive Série Atelier line, the Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Dusk is priced at CHF 93,000 (excluding taxes). It’s an expensive proposition, no doubt, but Laurent Ferrier nailed the execution taking a high-end annual calendar and wrapping it in an artistic, twilight-inspired palette that feels genuinely special rather than just another colorway swap.
