Panerai has lately been focusing on making watches that are loaded with technology and make use of innovative materials giving a glimpse of what the future holds for the brand. While this new direction looks promising, the brand has not forgotten its tool watch roots, and the new Panerai Luminor Blu Mare (Reference PAM01085) is a testimony to this. Featuring a 44mm steel case and a striking blue dial this watch has been designed to offer a pure Panerai experience.
The face of the new PAM01085 is quintessential Panerai. Characterized by bold Arabic numerals at 12, 6, and 3, the dial has been presented in a deep shade of blue and has been given a sunburst finish to lend the watch a slightly elegant look. The hour index that constitutes the numerals and batons has been printed and coated heavily with luminous paint to ensure optimum legibility in dimly-lit conditions. Time can be read using the well-sized baton-style hour and minute hands along with a small leaf style hand that tracks seconds using the sub-dial at 9. Like the markers, the hands have also been coated with green Superluminova.
Similar to the dial, the case is also typical Panerai. Crafted from stainless steel, the case measures a large 44mm in diameter, but the relatively short chunky lugs make for a cushion style case that would wear comfortably on a variety of wrists. At the 3 o’clock position is a screw-down crown that is protected by Panerai’s signature crown protecting mechanism that not only ensures the 100-meter water resistance but also adds a ton of masculine character to the watch. Sitting on top of the case is a smooth polished bezel along with a sapphire crystal, whereas the case back has been kept closed and features a distinctive decagonal shape.
Under the hood of this watch is Panerai’s in-house caliber P.6000. This is a hand-wound movement that operates at a frequency 3Hz and offers a power reserve of around 3 days with just one barrel.
