TAG Heuer’s been on a roll for many years now. It’s shaken off its “my first expensive watch” persona to become a true competitor in the world of mechanical luxury wristwatches. Yes, the price tags also reflect that, but the watches look great, and this new Carrera Chronograph Glassbox Sand limited edition proves it.
Presented in a 39mm x 13.86mm stainless steel case (with 100m of water resistance), the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox Sand ref. CBS221H.FC8366 arrives in time for the summer season and, like the world’s deserts, it’s looking hot. The grained sand-coloured dial (which we could also call beige) looks sharp, especially when paired with its sand-coloured calfskin leather strap. All it needs now is to be paired with a white linen button-up shirt, some loose-fitting but smart-looking shorts, and a pair of Clarks Wallabees, and you’ve got summer on low-effort fashion lockdown.
The dial has a familiar layout, with the chronograph registers at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock, the running seconds at 6 O’clock, and a date window behind them. An anthracite ring around the dial’s edge provides a base for the chronograph scale.
Powering the watch is TAG Heuer’s self-winding calibre TH20-00, which is made in-house and builds on the Calibre Heuer 02. It features a 4Hz beat rate and a lengthy 80-hour power reserve. The chronograph has both a column wheel and a vertical clutch, meaning its operation is smooth and precise, and allows the chronograph to run nonstop without risk of damage.
Limited to 500 examples and sold exclusively in the European market, the price for one of these Carrera Chronograph Glassbox Sand watches is €7,900. It’s pricey, but it comes with good specs, which shows that TAG Heuer is aiming high.
