Seiko launches a special edition watch inspired by the Moon.

Seiko’s LX series are known to be the highest-end watches that they market, without it being a “Grand Seiko”. Now Seiko released a new watch Seiko Prospex LX U.S. Sky Special Edition, which is launched specifically for the U.S market, with a dial design inspired by space travel and the Moon.

LX being shorthand for “luxe”, the watch has a sporty aesthetics, thanks to the inspiration from Seiko’s 1968 Professional Diver. The case which is 44.8mm in diameter and has a height of 14.7mm, is made of titanium with a super-hard coating, this renders the case almost impervious to scratches. The case chamfers feature Seiko’s renowned Zaratsu polishing and the basic case profile is shared with their classic Seiko Professional Diver from 1968. The caseback isn’t something to write home about, as it’s a basic solid caseback, but does help in providing the 100 m water resistance. Attached with the case is a three-link oyster style bracelet in brushed titanium.

The dial is inspired by the silvery light of the Moon, featuring a crosshatch texture on the dial with grooved applied indices, brushed paddle hands and a mirror-polished stick seconds hand and are treated with Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite luminescent substance. A date window sits at 3 o’clock and a power-reserve indicator at 8 o’clock. Rests atop the dial is the tall gear-toothed GMT bezel, which is rendered in two-tone black and gray sapphire.

Powered by Seiko’s in-house 5R66 Spring Drive GMT movement, this complex proprietary system enables the movement to proudly exhibit its hypnotically smooth sweeping seconds hand. The movement offers a power reserve of 72 hours and an accuracy of +15/-15 seconds per month (+1/-1 seconds per day), which is far beyond the traditional accuracy of a mechanical movement.

Seiko Prospex LX U.S. Sky Special Edition, Ref. SNR051 will be available exclusively through select Seiko Luxe retailers in the United States beginning in January 2022, in a special presentation box, with an MSRP of $5,500.
