In support of Movember, a Foundation that tackles some of the biggest health issues facing men including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, Oris launches another great vintage-inspired model – the Oris Movember 2018 Edition.
A brief overview, the Movember Foundation raises awareness for men’s important health issues as well as raise funds to fund its projects. Also, only a portion of the sales made this autumn of the new Oris Movember Edition goes to the charity which is CHF 100,000.
Aside from its inspirations or let’s say personalized goodwill, the watch is a very cool timepiece. The Oris Movember 2018 Edition is based on the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date introduced at Baselworld 2018 and if you remember that one, you know how cool this watch really is. Moreover, the new watch revives the brand’s most popular design which is the 1984 Pointer Date that in itself is also based on a 1938 design. The Oris Movember 2018 Edition is basically a pilot’s watch with pure vintage inspiration featuring a date indicated by a central hand pointing to a peripheral date track. To me it appears as a tool watch which is definitely a win for most of us.
Also, the brand relies on the larger edition of the watch for this edition, with a 40 mm case made of satin-finished and polished stainless steel, however, a 36 mm version of the Pointer Date is also available. Nonetheless, we can still find the signature elements of the base watch on this Movember edition including the knuckled bezel, the oversized crown and the overall tool like appearance.
The key differences on this Movember 2018 Edition are the matte black dial with 4N gold-plated hands, gilt inscriptions and markings and faux-patina Luminova for the hands and hour indices. The dial hints vintage, there is no doubting this appeal but it also brings legibility to a maximum. The 4N gold coated hands are class on their own and normally this combination would not bring so much depth, gold and matte but in here, it just stands out. The strap is also different featuring a vintage style and a mustache embossed at 12 and 6 o’clock – clearly, you can see where the “mo” comes from. Powering the new watch is the same movement as the standard edition, the Calibre Oris 754 that is a modified automatic Sellita movement.
Furthermore, the Oris Movember 2018 Edition comes with a unique caseback with Movember engravings and is delivered with an additional fabric strap and a leather pouch. The screwed caseback is definitely tool-ish. As for the straps, the leather one with a mustache near the lugs is definitely playful but the brand acknowledges our need for some action hence we also get the fabric strap for practical uses. Upon its availability, it will retail for a price of CHF 1,800 per piece. Visit Oris here.
