TAG Heuer has taken a bold step into the past with their latest release, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Watch in 18K Gold. This watch pays homage to a significant era in both watchmaking and Formula 1 racing. In the 1970s, TAG Heuer, known as Heuer back then, gifted gold Carrera watches to Formula 1 race winners, creating a lasting connection between the brand and motorsports. The latest release also culminates the 60th year anniversary of the Carrera series.
This modern interpretation of that iconic gold watch features a 39mm 18K 3N yellow gold case, measuring 13.9mm in thickness. The case design retains the signature “Glassbox” style with polished surfaces and sloping upper case edges, making it visually striking. The watch’s aesthetic is elevated by the bezel-less, domed sapphire crystal that seamlessly integrates with the case, creating a sleek and modern silhouette, while the 18K gold case infuses an element of opulence into the sporty timepiece.
The dial of the Carrera Chronograph is a dazzling centerpiece, featuring a vertically brushed gold-plated surface, reminiscent of the original Carrera, and black azuré counters for the chronograph minutes and hours. Notably, the black subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock create a bold and eye-catching contrast.
A date display at 6 o’clock is a nod to the modern design, even though some purists might prefer a black date wheel. The polished baton hands and applied indices add a touch of elegance, and they are all luminescent for readability in low-light conditions.
Powering the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph is the in-house TH20-00 automatic chronograph movement. Visible through the sapphire display caseback, this movement boasts an impressive 80-hour power reserve and a 28,800 bph beat rate, and includes features like a column wheel and a vertical clutch for precise chronograph functionality.
Completing the luxurious yet sporty look is a black rally-style calfskin strap with an 18K yellow gold pin buckle, enhancing the watch’s connection to its racing heritage. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph in 18K Gold is available now through authorized dealers with an MSRP of 21,000 CHF.
