Last month I reviewed the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 40 mm and 37mm models. The Saxonia is a series under A. Lange & Sohne that permeates the concept of ‘beauty in simplicity’.
Yesterday, in conjunction of the reopening of the Lange Boutique in Ginza, Tokyo, A. Lange & Söhne presented two new models of the Saxonia Automatic with terra-brown dials solid-silver dial; the first in the series to feature dial with this particular color. An excellent choice as it imparts a natural tone to the watch. There two models come either in pink-gold (Ref. 380.042) or white-gold (Ref. 380.044).
Both models are pure dress watches with a width of 38.5 mm wide. What is more impressive is the thickness of the watch at just 7.8 mm considering it has an automatic movement in its heart. Colour-coordinated, hand-stitched alligator leather straps with gold pink buckle in red brown for the pink-gold casing and dark brown for the white-gold casing emphasizes the elegant nature of these watches.
As with all Lange dials, the “terra-brown” is a disc of solid silver, finished with a fine-grained surface and given a brown coating. All of the hour markers as well as the hands are made of solid gold. Having the sub-second dial at 6 o’clock creates a good symmetry vis-à-vis the various texts printed on the dial. The solid-gold hands and hour markers compliment the dial color and exudes sophistication and class.
Protecting the dial is a flat sapphire crystal. The same type of crystal is also used for the display case-back.
Both models have the in-house automatic Calibre L086.1 movement powering the watch. The large gold and platinum central rotor powers a single main spring barrel, which provides 72 hours of power reserve when fully wound. This Calibre operates at the 21,600 VPH or 3 Hertz range. The movement can be seen through the large displace case-back. The finishing of this movement features brand-typical quality hallmarks such as engraved balance cock, hand-finished bridges, polished beveled angles, blued screws and high-end detailing platinum rotor rim.
My personal favorite is the pink-gold version. I can really see the beauty of simplicity that is typical of these kinds of dress watches. It is elegant yet not showy.
