The German brand Sinn is known for offering some really well-crafted tool watches which are not only loaded with some cool tech, but at the same time are quite accessible and realistically priced making them a nice value proposition. Having delivered some really popular aviation-inspired watches such as the versatile 3 handed Sinn556i and the traditional looking Sinn103st in the past, Sinn seems to have a penchant for making pilot style watches and is releasing another modern looking pilot’s chronograph for Baselworld 2018 called the Sinn 936. This watch features Sinn’s new chronograph movement SZ05, is water resistant to 100 meters, has a Tegimented case and is also antimagnetic up to 80,000 A/m. And with all this being offered at under 3k, Sinn does seem to have a winner at their hands.
One of the first things that strikes you about the Sinn 936 is its clean and highly legible dial, especially for a chronograph. Rendered in a deep black color with a matte finish to it, the dial on this watch presents an almost perfect backdrop for the highly contrasting white hour and minute markings. The sword style hour and minute hands are well proportioned with the minute hand reaching the tip of the minute markings, making it easy to tell the time at a glance. The indices along with the hour and minute handset have also been coated with luminescent material to cater to those low light situations. Another interesting detail is use of red to segregate the chronograph functions from the rest of the functions on the watch. One of my general pet peeves with chronographs is that though they are cool to look at, a lot many times they end up being a little too busy. But folks at Sinn have really nailed it with the Sinn 936 by keeping the dial highly balanced by opting for a bi-compax layout courtesy of the SZ05 movement. This is a highly modified version of the Valjoux 7750 and comprises of just two subdials with a 60-minute stopwatch display at 3 and a running seconds at 9, getting rid of any unnecessary clutter.
The case on the Sinn 936 has a diameter of 43mm and features an array of technical features making it special. First up is Sinn’s Tegiment technology which raises the hardness level of the base material such as stainless steel making it highly scratch resistant. Next is the use of a magnetically soft inner case that helps in providing high magnetic field protection up to 80000 A/m. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters which is quite decent for an aviation-themed watch.
The Sinn 936 is yet another no-nonsense offering from the Teutonic brand that definitely punches way above its weight and class. The watch would retail at Euro 2890 on a leather strap, Euro 3120 on a bracelet and Euro 3165 on a silicone strap. For more info, visit Sinn online.
