A short while back, Oris showcased their latest in-house developed movement, the Calibre 400. And now, after teasing it for the past few days, the brand has finally introduced the first watch that will be powered by this new movement, putting all the speculation and anticipation to rest. So, here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the new Oris Aquis Calibre 400.
Before we look at the watch, let’s do a quick recap of the key features that the Calibre 400 brings forth. A self-winding movement, the Calibre 400 beats at a frequency of 4Hz, comprises 21 jewels and can serve you for five days when fully wound. Basic specifications aside, this new movement comes equipped with a more stable rotor system and around 30 silicon components to offer high resistance to magnetic fields. Oris also claims that the Calibre 400 can keep time within -3 to +5 seconds a day which is even better than what a COSC certified movement offers. And finally, as an icing on the cake, Oris is offering a 10-year warranty on the movement. Now back to the watch itself.
The Aquis is one of the most popular references within the Oris catalog. Featuring a distinctive 43.5mm kettle-shaped case with short chunky lugs that offers a water resistance of 300 meters the Aquis is a solidly built dive watch that is ready to go anywhere and do anything. The new Aquis Calibre 400 does not see get any changes as far as the design is concerned except for one difference, which is that the exhibition case back now gives a great view of the industrially finished Calibre 400.
Like the case, the dial on the new Aquis Calibre 400 looks familiar with a few subtle changes. You still get the polished applied hour markers, a printed minute track, a date window at 6, and a well-proportioned handset. However, if you notice closely, you can see that the date window has now been enlarged to offer better visibility, and the text above 6, now includes the text “5 DAYS” highlighting the autonomy of the new movement. The dial has been presented in a beautiful shade of blue with a striking gradient effect that is light at the center and attains an almost blackish hue towards the outer periphery. The sunburst dial offers a nice contrast against the polished elements making for a visually engaging experience.
