Introducing The IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide Watch

BY JOVAN KRSTEVSKI

For 2020 IWC has shifted focus from its widely popular aviation-inspired watches towards the more elegant side of its catalog and has served an entire platter of new Portugieser watches. While most of the new releases lean towards the dressier side, there are few such as the new Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide that strike a fine balance between being sporty and elegant at the same time.

As it belongs to the Portugieser family, the basic design ethos on the new Yacht Club Moon and Tide remains quite familiar. So, what you have here is a beautiful deep blue dial that provides a perfect backdrop for the applied golden Arabic numerals, a printed white rail-road style minute track, and the elegant leaf-shaped hands. But what makes this one stand out are the nautically inspired elements and other sporty bits spread across the dial. First and foremost are the two balanced sub-dials. The one at 12 displays the Moonphase in two hemispheres along with the strength of tides whereas the one at 6 gives a high and low tide indication. Both registers are well designed with nice attention to detail and are easy to read. Another interesting touch is the use of red that adds a nice dash of color to the dial. What further adds to the casual look of this watch is the use of lume on indices and the hands, and a second minutes track printed on the flange.

The case on this watch is crafted from 18k 5N pink gold. It measures 44.2mm in diameter and has a thickness of around 15mm, both of which would combine to offer a ton of wrist presence on the wearer’s wrist, just like a sports watch should. Furthermore, to enhance the rugged look of the watch, the crown has been protected using crown guards. The case is water-resistant to just 60 meters which seems a little low given the Yacht Club branding.

Driving the watch is IWC’s in-house caliber 82835. This is an automatic movement that beats at 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of around 60 hours. It has been nicely decorated using Cotes de Geneve and perlage and can be viewed through the sapphire exhibition case back.

The new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide would come attached to a blue rubber strap and would retail for USD 33,100.
