The Richard Mille RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago is a technical marvel that cements the brand’s deep-rooted connection to professional cycling. Released as a limited edition of only 50 pieces, the watch serves as a tribute to the legendary Italian bicycle manufacturer Colnago, mirroring the precision and lightweight performance required at the pinnacle of the sport.
At the heart of the timepiece is the manually wound Calibre RM64-01, an ultra-skeletonised movement built on a Grade 5 titanium baseplate. Its architecture draws explicit inspiration from high-performance bicycle racing frames, prioritizing structural rigidity and lightness. The movement features 274 components, meticulously finished with microblasted surfaces, black and grey PVD treatments, and hand-polished bevels.
The layout of the movement is designed to evoke a bicycle drivetrain. A fast-rotating barrel, which provides approximately 65 hours of power reserve, is positioned at 1 o’clock, while the one-minute tourbillon regulator is placed at 7 o’clock. Notably, the upper titanium bridges feature a distinctive star-shaped profile, a nod to the tubing geometry of Colnago’s iconic Master frames from the 1980s. These bridges are finished in white lacquer with azure blue and 5N red gold accents, matching the aesthetic of modern Colnago C68 bicycles.
The case, measuring 43.21mm x 14.23mm, utilizes Richard Mille’s expertise in advanced composites. It combines White Quartz TPT with newly developed Azure Blue Quartz TPT inserts within the notched bezel, ensuring extreme durability and minimal weight. For the first time in a Richard Mille sports watch, a 5N red gold flange is integrated, providing a warm contrast to the blue and white technical exterior.
Every aspect of the watch is infused with cycling references:
- The Crown: Made from Quartz TPT with a 5N red gold core, it features the historic “Ace of Clubs” emblem associated with Colnago.
- The Hands: Specially designed to resemble bicycle cranksets.
- Performance: The movement includes a variable-inertia balance wheel with four regulating screws, oscillating at 3 Hz (21,600 vph). This free-sprung architecture is chosen for its shock resistance and timekeeping stability, which is essential for a timepiece designed with the rigors of professional cycling in mind.
Priced at CHF 800,000 excluding taxes, the RM 64-01 is a uncompromising synthesis of high-end horology and the storied craftsmanship of Italian bicycle engineering.
