By this point in time, Seiko’s efforts for the preservation of the world’s oceans isn’t exactly a secret. Seiko embarks on this cause by giving back to the diver community collecting and documenting marine debris in aquatic ecosystems by contributing a part of the sales from the Seiko Prospex “Save the Ocean” line. Every year since the initial models were released, Seiko has released new Save The Ocean timepieces that are driven by diverse representations of the oceans and the marine creatures that inhabit them. Back in the summer, Seiko introduced the Prospex Heritage Turtle, a heritage re-interpretation model that came in a few varieties. Now Seiko has just introduced the newest member of the Save The Ocean line of watches, in the form of Seiko Prospex Glacier ‘Save the Ocean’ 110th Anniversary Limited Edition SPB333.
This Seiko Prospex in particular focuses on the research on a wide range of natural phenomena seen in polar regions, notably the research on recent global environmental changes brought on by global warming. As a result, the dial exhibits polar markings in the form of vertical engraved lines and a textured dial that is silvery white in color. The dial is hosted by the characteristic turtle case, dubbed that moniker by the Seiko fanbase, it comes in a solid stainless steel case with 41mm diameter size profile and a thickness of 12.3mm. The very thin body of the watch is based on the diver’s watch reference 6105-8000 from 1968. The 4:30 date window, as well as the 4 o’clock crown serves as a reminder of the Turtle case, in addition to the signature case form. The water resistance is rated at 200m (20 bar).
The driving engine of the new Seiko Prospex SPB333 is Seiko’s cutting-edge and efficient 6R35 automatic Caliber. The movement is protected by a solid caseback and it ticks at the frequency of 21,600 vph (3 Hz) and offers an impressive 70 hours power reserve.
The Seiko Prospex Glacier ‘Save the Ocean’ 110th Anniversary Limited Edition comes with a choice of a standard Turtle five-link steel bracelet or a NATO style strap with traditional Japanese braid pattern called Seichu, made from recycled plastic bottles and produced specifically for the SPB333. It is a 5,000 pieces limited edition model and has a price tag of $1,300/€1,350.
