Glashütte Original has cobbled together a rather striking variation of its Seventies Chronograph, this time tailor-made for North America. Dubbed the Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph reference 1-37-02-18-02-70, it arrives with a peculiar mix of vintage charm and present-day engineering.
Housed in a 40mm x 14.1mm stainless steel case, the watch brings that unmistakable square cushion profile that screams 1970s, but there’s nothing outdated about this machine. The crown is flanked by two guards that melt into the chrono pushers with little fuss. Water resistance is 100 meters.
Watch’s character really starts to shine on the dial. A matte white lacquer base plays host to a set of black galvanised sub dials, etched with a fine vinyl-esque texture that oozes retro bravado. A red chronograph seconds hand and a bright red 10-minute marker inject a burst of excitement to an otherwise calm, retro design.
Chronograph functions are sensibly arrayed, with the brand’s signature Panorama Date positioned neatly at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3, a small seconds plus power reserve at 9, and a clean 12-hour counter sitting squarely up top.
Ticking behind the curtain is the in-house Calibre 37-02, a self-winding column wheel chronograph that runs at 4 Hz and boasts a respectable 70-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, one can spy the gold-laden rotor, Glashütte stripes, blued screws, and bevelled steel components in action.
With just 100 pieces in circulation, each piece is boxed up with a stainless steel bracelet and a rubber strap. The price is $17,900. Available solely in the United States and Canada.
