Panerai’s historical entanglement with the Italian Navy is a tale as old as time and now it’s time for a new chapter to unfold with the introduction of the Submersible Marina Militare and its Carbotech counterpart. This duo, a bona fide tribute to the Italian naval air arm Aviazione Navale, is a clear nod to the brand’s deep seated maritime heritage. It is a further development in a long line of resolutely built, rugged diving instruments, crafted with the no-nonsense design ethos that comes from decades of maritime service.
The casework in either model is anything but meek. At 44mm x 13.45mm for the steel version and 44mm x 14.25mm for the Carbotech, the wrist presence is undeniable. The Carbotech model’s carbon fiber composite lends a stealthy lightness, accompanied by a black carbon bezel. The steel version, forged from 316LVM stainless steel, feels every bit the dependable seafaring tool, topped with a matte green ceramic bezel. Each is water resistant to 300 meters.
On the dial front, Panerai leans into its military muse. The green grained matte surface fades to black at the edges, creating depth without theatrical excess. The indices, now enlarged by 20 percent, make for more confident legibility, while grey Super-LumiNova grade X2 coats the hands and markers. Both the models carry an engraved Aviazione Navale aircraft anchor insignia, a nod to its airborne naval connections.
Inside both beats the P.900 automatic movement, slim at 4.2mm yet offering a generous 72-hour power reserve. Operating at 28,000 vibrations per hour, it provides hours, minutes, small seconds, a date and stop-second functionality. This is a practical caliber for those who expect reliability without unnecessary embellishment.
Each watch comes on a green canvas strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a trapezoidal pin buckle; AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel for the Submersible Marina Militare and blackened titanium for the Carbotech version, plus an extra black rubber strap. Prices sit at 12,500 USD for steel and 19,500 USD for Carbotech, with both available immediately and produced without limitation.
