Pre-Baselworld 2019: MeisterSinger Urban Day Date Watch

BY JOVAN KRSTEVSKI

The watchmaking world is an interesting place to be, where on one hand you have the big guns sweating it out to win the battle of supreme accuracy and on the other, there are brands such as Meistersinger who are playing around with the idea of relaxed time-keeping through their single-handed watches. To kick off things for 2019, MeisterSinger is adding a fun and purposeful new watch to its Urban collection which it introduced last year. Featuring a day date complication the new MeisterSinger Day Date adds a dose of practicality and function to the existing Urban lineup.

The dial the MeisterSinger Urban brought forward a nice mix of traditional and modern elements, and the day date takes it a step further. The hour markings are still a mix of double-digit numerals and wedge-shaped indices but with a few tweaks. Firstly the numerals have now been placed at 2, 4, 8 and 10 (instead of the 12, 3, 6 and 9 arrangement on the Urban). Further to that the prominent wedges have been merged into the minute track to highlight the five-minute intervals and have been replaced with sharper looking slim triangles. All of this has been done to seamlessly blend the curved day window at 12 and the small circular date aperture at 6 into the dial and we feel that MeisterSinger has done a great job by keeping the symmetry of the dial intact. Another interesting detail is the way the day and date have been made to visually stand out by using red(on blue and black dials) and black discs (on white and cream dials), which also ends up adding some nice contrast to the dial.

The stainless steel case on this watch is moderately sized at 40mm, which should make it sit comfortably on a majority of wrists. It is water resistant to 50 meters and has a sapphire crystal on top as well as an exhibition glass at the back to give a nice view of the engine that propels this watch. As this is sort of a point of entry into the world of MeisterSinger, the brand has opted for a reliable Japanese Miyota 8245 movement to power this watch instead of a Swiss comparable.

The movement operates at a frequency of 28800 bph and offers a power reserve of around 42 hours. As far as decoration is concerned there is not much to write home about, but the movement does come with a customized rotor.

Overall the Urban day date is a nice step towards diversification of the brand’s Urban collection. The watch would come fitted with a high-quality textile strap and would retail at a price of EUR 995 starting end of February 2019. Visit MeisterSinger here.
