IWC marks the 50th anniversary of one of its most important designs with two limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic models, bringing Gérald Genta’s legendary 1976 Ingenieur SL Reference 1832 back into focus. The two new Ingenieur Automatic 40 & 35 50th Anniversary keep the unmistakable character of the original while introducing a much less common dial configuration inspired by a rare version of the 1970s watch.

When the Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 arrived in 1976, it was part of the emerging luxury sports watch category that would later become one of the most important segments in modern watchmaking. Designed by Gérald Genta, the watch combined an integrated bracelet, distinctive bezel and technical construction with a more elegant sports-watch profile.

Interestingly, the Ingenieur SL was not an immediate commercial success. Only 598 pieces were produced between 1976 and 1983, but the watch became increasingly appreciated by collectors over the following decades. For its 50th anniversary, IWC has gone back to those original design codes with two stainless steel models measuring 40mm and 35mm.

The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary, Ref. IW328910, has a stainless steel case measuring 40mm x 10.8mm thick, while the smaller Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary, Ref. IW324909, measures 35mm x 9.4mm.

Both watches feature the characteristic Ingenieur bezel secured by five screws, one of the defining details of Genta’s original design. The bezel combines satin finishing with polished edges, while the cases use a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces to give the relatively simple shape more depth.

The new models are rated to 100 meters of water resistance and feature a screw-down crown and convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

The biggest visual difference from the regular Ingenieur models is the dial. Instead of the familiar textured grid pattern, IWC has chosen a silver-plated dial with a distinctive brushed finish, inspired by a rare variant of the original Ingenieur SL. Rhodium-plated hands and applied metal hour markers provide the contrast, with Super-LumiNova used for nighttime legibility. There is also a subtle anniversary detail at 12 o’clock, where the usual lightning-bolt element in the Ingenieur logo has been replaced by the number “50”.

It is a small detail, but one that makes these editions immediately recognizable without covering the dial in anniversary branding.

The 40mm model is powered by IWC’s in-house Caliber 32111, an automatic movement operating at 4Hz (28,800vph) and providing an impressive 120-hour power reserve. Its double-pawl winding system is designed to efficiently build up that five-day reserve. IWC has also retained the soft-iron inner case that protects the movement from magnetic fields, echoing the technical purpose of the original Ingenieur SL.

For the 35mm model, IWC uses a different approach with Caliber 47110. It offers a 42-hour power reserve and is visible through a sapphire display caseback, with circular graining, Geneva stripes, and a gold-plated oscillating weight. Both watches come on integrated stainless steel bracelets with butterfly folding clasps. The 40mm bracelet is fully satin-finished, while the 35mm version adds polished center links for a slightly more dress-like appearance.

The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary Ref. IW328910 is limited to 1,150 pieces and priced at €14,900, while the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary Ref. IW324909 is also limited to 1,150 pieces and priced at €13,000.

The Ingenieur SL has become one of the more interesting chapters in Gérald Genta’s design history, particularly because its importance was not immediately recognized when the watch was new. These two anniversary editions make sense because IWC has not tried to completely reinvent the design.

Instead, the 40mm and 35mm models focus on the details that made the original Ingenieur SL so recognizable, while the unusual brushed silver dial gives each watch its own identity. For collectors who appreciate the Genta-era Ingenieur, these are a particularly interesting way to mark its 50th anniversary without simply reproducing the most familiar version of the 1970s original.
