The upcoming Only Watch auction is indeed sizzling with a lot of surprises and here comes Harry Winston joining the foray with their Ocean Dual Time Retrograde exclusively for Only Watch 2015. Now, that’s what I call a real surprise since complicated watches never come this uniquely designed and specifically repurposed. Nonetheless, for the fans of Harry Winston, this watch doesn’t come new, but for the newbies, well this is your chance to experience the common signatures seen from complicated Harry Winston watches such as the popular Shuriken 4-point star which in the watch also comes as a power indicator just above the 6 o’clock. In fact, a lot of you will agree that the classic Ocean is typical of a sports watch and as such it is rather bulky to say the least. However, for the Ocean Dual Time Retrograde, everything is uniquely fresh and with lots of refinements after all you gotta bid to have it.
So what’s really new with the Ocean aside from Harry Winston’s avant-garde designs? Turns out, nothing really fantastic for the hardcore HW fans but if you look closer you’ll see that this piece comes with a 44.2mm case made of 18k white gold. The size is a tad larger, but this is where it garners its masculine appeal, darn it size always matters right? One look and you’ll know that the watch tries to show its vigor through the typical features of Harry Winston brand such as the 3 protrusions next to the crown. The design is neat though with polished accents on the edges of the case, bezel, lugs, and crown.
The complication of the watch involves 2 time zones which are elegantly displayed through a multilayered dial. The retrograde aspect of the watch is moving the local time with an anodized aluminum time indicator hand which is taking a full quarter of the dial around the 6 and 10. It features a unique disconnect mechanism that makes it possible to adjust the time backward and forward with relative ease through the crown. As for the multilayered aspect of the dial, it also makes it appear as half skeletonized which is sweet making it possible to see bits and pieces of the movement. The day and night indicator is located at the 3 whilst the Shuriken 4-point star is at the 6. If you look at the dial, the home time uses the Shuriken itself for the 12, 3, 6, and 9-hour markers. The calendar aperture is finely placed at the 4 o’clock.
Power is provided by a self-winding caliber made of 281 components. It also runs at 4Hz and features 32 jewels. Parts of the movement can be seen through the multilayered dial particularly the skeleton oscillating weight. You can also see the flat balance spring in silicon and chamfered bridges. Remaining true to its heritage, it is also possible to submerge the Ocean up to 100 meters.
