Jacob & Co. is one of those companies like Richard Mille or MB&F, they create extraordinary pieces that other watch companies simply will not do. They make watches which could potentially change the future of material use, movement design and assembly and even the whole layout of the wristwatch as we know it. Today Jacob & Co. presents us with The Epic SF24 watch which is focused on the modern-day travelling wristwatch enthusiast who also happens to be a big fan of modern industrial design language.
The Epic SF24 watch is, of course, a one-off piece for the Only Watch 2015 charity auction. This particular watch stands out from all the others due to the bulbous GMT function at the top of the dial. The GMT function in this is inspired by the old style information display units that you might well find in an international airport, train station or just generally dotted about the place overseas that you might find on your travels hence the Epic SF24 being designed with globetrotters in mind. To make this system work, Jacob & Co. had to use a total of 103 tiny pieces just to make it work so that the number flap moves only when it’s supposed to. To change time zone, the user simply pushes the large red button on the left end of the cylinder, this cycles through 24 different cities around the world, another interesting addition to this is the ability for the customer to choose to have a custom flap fitted as well which will show the time zone in any city of their choice. This large, rounded addition to the watch isn’t pleasing to my eyes, but that is completely my personal opinion, anyone who chooses to buy this watch will be delighted by its mechanical charm.
This watch is presented in grade 5 titanium which is 45mm in diameter with red touches on the crown, dial and the push piece for the GMT function. It also features an in-house JCAA02 movement which is self-winding and is also made of 473 individual parts and is on display thanks to a sapphire crystal located on the back of the case. The watch has a black alligator leather strap with a titanium deployment buckle to boot.
Like all the watches in the Only Watch auctions, the Epic SF24 by Jacob & Co. will be auctioned in November with all of the proceeds going to charity to help the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
