We have seen lots of goodies from Kickstarter and we love it mainly because of novelty and of course the price point. Believe it or not, you can have daring masterpieces for a fraction of the price offered by the big players.
Going back to the Hercules, well if you wonder what the name is for, it’s somehow literal. If you’re familiar with the massive Howard Hughes’ H4 Hercules aircraft then you can get a faint idea of what the watch is about. Team Pier always wanted a bigger watch with all the bells and whistles they crave for that are not offered in the market. Fun fact, the massive aircraft was built using wood, a very simple material for such a hulking machine. So Team Pier thought, why not build a masterpiece out of simple materials found in the horology world? So here it is folks, the great Hercules.
The Hercules sports a 50 mm stainless steel case. This is massive yet very minimalist. Design-wise its impressive and very powerful with four variants in steel, sandblasted, gun metal, or PVD black. At first look, the hexagonal design seems odd but the smooth corners give it a unique character. According to the team, the case fits both small and large wrists comfortably. And talking about comfort, the crown doesn’t have sharp edges that usually digs in whenever you bend.
On the dial side, everything is bright. Glow in the dark watches will never be the same as the Hercules fully glows in the dark thanks to its impressive fully lumed dial. It lights up to a beautiful blue in the dark literally allowing you to use the watch as some sort of an illuminating device. The design is direct with clear indices and blacked diamond styled hands. The date window is just below 3 o’clock and overall, there is no clutter. Legibility is excellent considering the massive size of the watch. Indeed, the reverse lumi style dial fully coated in Super Luminova C1 is a huge plus. The mineral crystal glass covering the dial is impact resistant adding more durability to the watch.
The Hercules draws power from a Swiss Ronda 515. You can bet for the longevity of this proven robust movement that needs little maintenance over time. Based on tangible data, it runs even after months of not wearing the watch of course, it’s quartz. As such, its distinction is a given sporting a timing accuracy that is accurate down to the seconds for years to come, the true meaning of maintenance-free. For now this is the movement of choice but who knows in the future we could get a mechanical one but knowing the price point, well this is already a steal.
