Blue has always looked good on any watch face probably because we find it so prominent in our surroundings. It is also very prominent in the fine arts such as Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Picasso’s Blue Period. The four Blue Series models released by A. Lange & Söhne takes this blue fascination to a whole new level. The watches: The Lange 1, Lange 1 Daymatic, Saxonia And Saxonia Automatic models are available in deep-blue solid-silver dial matched with super smooth white-gold cases. Note that these are four different watches powered by different movements. All the models showcase the signature hallmarks of A. Lange & Söhne brand certainly making them unique works of art.
The Lange 1 looks nice and comfortable at the dressy size of 38.5 mm by 9.8 mm. On the blue dial, the time indicated in hours and minutes is presented on the left sub-dial while the seconds sub-dial is at 5 o’clock. There is also the power-reserve indicator that sits on the main dial beside 3 o’clock while the Lange outsize date is at 1 o’clock. This arrangement seems to aid the legibility of the watch but it’s mainly designed for classic elegance. Its movement is the manually wound Lange manufacture calibre L121.1 sporting 72 hours of power reserve. Parts of the lavishly finished and decorated movement can be seen through the sapphire-crystal caseback which is very nice. The superb push button at 10 c’clock facilitates rapid date correction which is super cool. It wears on a classy dark blue hand-stitched alligator leather with a white-gold prong buckle. The Lange 1 is lavish with its choice of materials such as gold and rhodium for the hands and appliques not mentioning the 43 jewels and 8 screwed gold chatons in the movement.
Next is the Lange 1 Daymatic powered by a self-winding Lange manufacture calibre L021.1 sporting 50 hours of power reserve. On the watch face, the Lange 1 Daymatic seems to be the reversed Lange 1 but don’t be fooled as this one is an automatic crafted to the most exacting Lange quality standards, decorated and assembled by hand although they all are. Its main distinguishing feature is the retrograde day-of-week indicator at 9 o’clock and its slightly bigger 39.5 mm case. It also has luminous gold and rhodiumed hour, minute and day-of-week hands for impressive legibility even in the dark. It also wears on dark blue hand-stitched alligator leather with white-gold prong buckle. The Lange 1 Daymatic also features sapphire crystal display caseback to showcase its lavishly decorated movement.
Third on the series is the Saxonia powered by a manually wound Lange manufacture calibre L941.1 with 45 hours of power reserve. This is also the smallest in the series sporting 35 mm by 7.3 mm white-gold case. On the watch face, it benefits from the full display of the time unlike the sub-dialed main time on the Lange 1 and Lange 1 Daymatic. Its subsidiary seconds with stop seconds is at the traditional 6 o’clock making the Saxonia a preferred choice for those looking for more traditional time display. Its movement also features shock-resistant Nivarox balance spring that aids for the excellent precision of the watch. It wears on dark blue hand-stitched alligator leather with white-gold prong buckle.
Finally, we have the Saxonia Automatic which is nearly identical to the Saxonia except for its bigger 38.5 mm by 7.8 mm white-gold case and self-winding Lange manufacture calibre L086.1 with an astonishing 72 hours of power reserve. It also has a larger subsidiary seconds with stop seconds at 6 o’clock. On the deep blue solid silver dial, both the Saxonia and Saxonia Automatic sport gold, rhodiumed hands and appliques.
The four Blue Series models are all impressive and you will only find key difference on how you want to use the watches and of course in the price point which is not yet available as of writing so stay tuned.
