Here we have Orion Neomatik 41 date midnight blue and Orion Neomatik 41 date olive gold, the two new models from NOMOS Glashütte. They feature new dial designs that are perfect for dressy occasions. At 41 millimeters in diameter, they are extremely comfortable and they are also very thin (we will talk about this farther in the article since it is due to the newly developed movement). What I like about the watch is that it is tailored fit to suit a large wrist and it slips quite easily under a shirt cuff.
Orion has been the brand’s bestselling watch since 1992. It basically sells on simplicity or the less is more philosophy. This is why we see design elements focused on gentle curves and clean lines. For the new watch, a date window has also been integrated into the classic Orion model at three o’clock. Meanwhile, the midnight blue version features subtle accents in gold that add more life to the clean dial.
The curved case of the Nomos Orion accommodates the new Neomatik date caliber, DUW 6101. Its slender size keeps the watch’s slim proportions. It comes at a mere 3.6 millimeters in height making this movement extremely thin. What is worth mentioning is that instead of adding the date mechanism on top of the movement, the designers integrated it into the existing caliber which is not an east task. This kind of success is of course attributed to the brand’s access to a watchmaking knowledge over years of in-house caliber production. The new date mechanism is also user-friendly allowing the wearer to quickly adjust the date either forwards or backwards with a half-turn of the crown.
The new models of the Nomos Orion Neomatikl models in olive gold and midnight blue form the Update series which is a collection of NOMOS watches powered by the innovative automatic movement DUW 6101. Unique to NOMOS Glashütte is the close collaboration between the NOMOS designers and watchmakers that simply results to a wider exploration on the design side. Product of this kind of environment is already seen on this watch with the subtle date window.
The DUW 6101 is just one of the mechanical movements within NOMOS timepieces that are both designed and made totally in-house in Glashütte, Germany. They are already in action on the two new models of the Nomos Orion Neomatik. We can also see the “NOMOS Glashütte Deutsche Uhrenwerke” on the movement’s bidirectional rotor showcasing the company’s credentials as an independent movement producer. In this industry, it is practically rare to find a watchmaker that designs and builds its own calibers in-house making NOMOS Glashütte one of roughly 20 companies worldwide to have done this feat.
