In 2018 Ulysse Nardin ventured out of the more formal look that the brand’s Marine clock inspired Torpilleur line offers and added two military-inspired watches with a casual vibe to the collection. For 2019 the brand is sticking to the military theme and is adding two new variations of the Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military watch. Featuring a bronze case with a blue dial and black DLC case with a black dial these news watches add a nice variety to the brands tactical looking watches.
The dial on these watches has a very utilitarian look with some interesting details. The dial is characterized by bold Arabic numerals which have been nicely applied giving it a nice sense of depth and have also been filled with luminous paint to aid low light visibility. The black dial variant is complemented by green colored numerals and handset whereas the blue dial has white colored markings and text along with a golden handset. There is some nice pop of color on the dial in the form of the red colored limited edition number which sits within the large sub-seconds dial at 6. All in all, the dials are highly legible and time can be easily read using the nicely proportioned handset. One of my favorite things about these dials is that Ulysse Nardin has not tried to insert a date window in there keeping things plain and simple as a military watch should be.
There are two case options available stainless steel and bronze. The case measures 44mm wide which is certainly on the larger side but what it also implies is that the case would offer tons of wrist presence. Sitting on top is a sapphire crystal which is held in place with a rather thin bezel. The case back is closed and has been deeply stamped with a torpedo boat motif. The case is water resistant to only 50 meters which I feel is a tad on the lower side for a modern rugged watch like this.
Powering these new watches is Ulysse Nardin’s in-house caliber UN-118. This is an automatic movement which operates at a frequency of 4Hz and offers a healthy power reserve of around 50 hours. While it would have been good to view the movement as Ulysse Nardin generally does a good job in decorating their movements but for this watch, the brand is trying to connect the wearer to the it’s rich marine history. The movement is also backed by COSC certification making it highly accurate as the watch would keep the time within a variation of -4 to +6 seconds per day. The COSC connection on these watches is present in the form of the white ‘C.W.’ text present above 6.
The new for 2019 Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military watches makes the brand’s military collection a well rounded one, with something there for everyone’s taste and liking. The watches would come attached to a blue/black leather strap or a green canvas strap. Both watches are limited to a production run of 300 pieces with the bronze variant priced at $8900 and the DLC variant priced at $7900.
