The Adrimal has been the face of Corum for a long time and is instantly recognizable through its distinctive case and dial work. Normally well known for its colorful aesthetic, Corum is for the first introducing an all-black version of the Admiral. Featuring a black case, strap and dial combination the new Admiral Corum 42 full black presents a stealthy take on one of Corum’s bestselling watches.
The Admirals collection from Corum consists of nautically inspired timepieces which first came into existence in the 1960s. Initially launched with a square shaped case the Admirals cup line up has undergone a series of changes to reach the current famous 12-sided case shape. In 2010 Corum celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Admirals collection and launched the new Admiral’s legend collection comprising watches with a refined and slimmer 42mm case, which went ahead to become a popular model for Corum, which also brings us down to this new black beauty which has the same case size.
The case on the admiral 42 full black stays true to the Corum DNA and features the popular dodecagonal shape. It is made from stainless steel and is then PVD coated giving it a dark and mysterious look. Complementing the case is an almost jet-black dial which is a big departure from the colorful dials of other watches from the Admiral collection. Characterizing the dial are still the 12 nautical pennants which act as the hour markers. While the previous version used multi-colored pennants the Admiral 42 Black uses a grey color tone for the minute markings as well as the pennants providing some nice contrast against the black dial. The dauphine-style hour and minute hands are skeletonized and have also been blackened out confirming to the all-black theme of the watch. The hands have also been filled with luminous material to improve low light visibility. There is a small sub-dial at 6 with numerals for the running seconds and finishing the dial is a nicely integrated date window at 3. Powering this watch is Corum’s automatic CO395 automatic movement. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 bph and offers a power reserve of 42 hours.
To conclude I would like to say that the Admiral 42 Black is a good but daring move by Corum. I say this because while it does bring in a new look to the watch I am not sure as to how many people would get drawn to it as they are used to seeing that bright and refreshing color pallet when they think of Corum. So, for those who are looking for a monochromatic Corum, this could be it. The watch would come attached to a black vulcanized rubber strap and would retail at USD 5,200. The production run is limited to 100 pieces only.
