IWC is one of the few brands which have a rich aviation history and is well known for producing some of the best pilots watches around. For 2019 the brand has introduced its Pilots watch chronograph in a nice racing green shade bringing a colorful twist to one of its more popular watches.
Initially launched to help pilots read the time inside the cockpit, the utilitarian and purposeful design of a pilot’s watch is still going strong after decades of existence and that is exactly what you get with the IWC Pilots Chronograph. Bold Arabic numerals characterize the dial and combined along with the sharp-looking sword style hands make for a highly legible dial. Being a chronograph there are 3 nicely executed sub-dials at 6, 9 and 12 to track the elapsed hours, running seconds and minutes. While the layout and other details look familiar, the major highlight of this watch is its British Racing Green color. While the Matt black shade on the regular version provides the watch a classic look, the deep emerald color along with its sunburst finish provides the watch a vibrant sparkle and gives it a distinctive visual appeal.
The case on this watch is made from stainless steel and has a diameter of 43mm and a height of around 15mm. While not a small watch it has a nice modern size, which is very much in line with its chronograph competitors. The case offers a nice mix of brushed and polished surfaces and features two chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, and a screw-down crown at 3 which helps to ensure the 60-meter water resistance.
Powering this watch is the caliber IWC 79320. This is an automatic chronograph movement based upon the widely popular ETA 7750. The movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of around 48 hours when fully wound. While it would have been great to look at the movement it has been hidden behind the closed case back on this instance.
The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition Racing Green (Reference: IW377726) is a handsome looking watch and is a great option for someone who is looking forward to a Pilots watch with a slightly sportier and vibrant aesthetic. The watch would come attached to a brown leather strap and would retail for CHF 6,300.
