Since its re-release a couple of years back, The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical has created quite a fan following for itself amidst lovers of field watches. Featuring a solid build quality, a highly legible dial and rugged looks this watch ticks all the right boxes for a great field watch. For 2020, Hamilton has given the Khaki Field Mechanical an all-black makeover.
One of the reasons behind the success of the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical was its highly legible face and thankfully nothing has changed on that front. Presented in black with a Matt finish, the dial is still characterized by Arabic numerals, supported by a secondary 24-hour military time index sitting on the inside. Placed on the outer periphery is a printed minute track which comprises thin hash marks along with triangles at increments of five that enhance the visual interest and have also been coated with custard colored luminous paint to help with low light visibility. Reading time is made possible through the sword-shaped hour and minute hands combined with an arrow tipped seconds hand. One of my favorite details on this dial is the lack of a date window that helps keep the dial clean and legible.
The case on the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical still measures 38mm in diameter and is made from stainless steel. But what sets things apart on this variant is the black PVD coating that matches the black dial quite well and gives the watch a nice tactical look. The case is water-resistant to 50 meters and features a sapphire crystal on the front and a closed case back.
Powering the watch is the Hamilton H-50 caliber, a modified version of the workhorse hand-wound movement ETA 2801 movement. The H-50 operates at a lower frequency of 3Hz as compared to the smoother 4Hz operation of the 2801 and offers a power reserve of around 80 hours. As for the functions, it hacks and keeps track of the minutes, hours and seconds.
The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Black is another great addition to the Khaki Field Mechanical collection. The watch would be accompanied by a black nato strap and would retail for EUR 495.
