The year 2020 marks the 10th anniversary of Laurent Ferrier and the brand is celebrating this special landmark by launching a special new watch, the Classic Origin Opaline. Featuring a refined silver opaline dial, a case made of grade 5 titanium, and a brand-new hand-wound movement, this new watch blends classic looks with avant-garde internals in true Laurent Ferrier style.
I have always been a great admirer of Laurent Ferrier’s clean and elegant approach toward Haute Horlogerie and the new Classic Origin Opaline is no exception. Presented in a nice subdued silver color, the dial on this watch looks attractive with a lot of interesting details. Starting with the hour index, what you get here is a mix of printed elongated hash marks along with slender applied white gold 3-dimensional triangles to give the face a nice sense of depth. Emanating from the center of the dial is a crosshair that ties the dial together eliminating any negative space and lends the watch a slightly sporty vibe. Located at a 6 is a large and nicely recessed subsidiary seconds dial with markings in red that bring in a nice splash of color. Moving outwards, you get a traditional railroad-style minute track with 24-hour numerals at intervals of 5, which has once again been highlighted in red. Finally, reading time is made possible using the brand’s signature Assegai-hands that have been crafted from solid white gold and add to the sophisticated look of the watch.
The polished case on this new watch has been made using grade 5 titanium, a material that is being used for the first time by the brand and is well known for being extremely lightweight and offering high corrosion resistance. The case measures 40mm in diameter and has a thickness of around 10mm which implies that the watch would easily slide under those cuffs. At 3 is the brand’s iconic ‘Ball-shaped’ crown that is well sized and should make winding the movement a pleasure.
Speaking of the movement, this new watch is driven by the brand’s new hand-wound caliber LF 116.01. It operates at a frequency of 3 Hz and offers a healthy autonomy of around 80 hours. The movement has been beautifully decorated and features bridges that have been hand beveled and presented in a black Rhodium finish. As far as the technicalities are concerned, there is plenty on offer, which includes a free spring balance and a Breguet overcoil to name a few. The movement can be appreciated through the sapphire exhibition case back.
The Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Opaline would come attached to a contrasting light brown Barbialla calf leather strap with Alcantara lining and would retail for CHF 28,500 without taxes.
