Seiko debuted the Seiko Speedtimer in 1969 with the ground-breaking Caliber 6139. It was the first automatic chronograph in history to use a vertical clutch and column wheel, two breakthroughs that still serve as standards for high-performance chronographs and have made significant advancements in the measurement of elapsed time in wristwatches. The Prospex collection has just added a new series of three solar chronograph watches which are inspired by the original Speedtimer and Seiko’s rich and ongoing legacy of sports timing.
SSC911
Presented in a stainless steel case, they are sized at 41.4mm x 13.0mm with two-tone aluminum bezels fitted onto them. The watch’s bezel features tachymeter markings that track the wearer’s speed over a certain amount of time. In addition, the inner bezel ring has markings for seconds, allowing for large, clearly visible indexes. The crown at the usual 3 o’clock and accompanying chronograph pushers on both sides of the crown are for the model. The dial is shielded from the front by a curved sapphire crystal, the inner surface of which has an anti-reflective coating. The water resistance rating is 10 bar (100 meters).
SSC913
The three Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph models SSC911, SSC913 and SSC915 come in three dial colors with their own two-tone bezel colors. All of the dials feature sunray finishing, giving the timepieces a modern and sleek appearance while maintaining the legibility that is the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer characteristic. In order to make the elapsed time stand out against the dial and be read rapidly, the chronograph minute hand at six o’clock and the center second hand are both red. The chronograph second-hand also extends right to the tachymeter markings at the dial edge. A subtle date window is present at 4:30 to ensure easy reading of the other functions. Lumibrite is applied to the twelve indexes and the hour and minute hands.
SSC915
The models are powered by Seiko’s solar Caliber V192, which is in turn powered by sunlight and stored that power for up to six months once it’s fully charged. The movement offers a 60-minute chronograph, 24-hour subdial and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.
The bracelet is also made in stainless steel and has a three-fold clasp with a push button release. From November 2022, all three watches will be offered at Seiko Boutiques and a few select retailers throughout the world, with USD700 the accompanying estimated suggested retail price.
