Piaget may not be a brand that hangs billboards outside the malls, or maybe they do, but I haven’t seen them personally (except in Switzerland). But the Polo line of watches from the Swiss brand is the most emblematic line of watches which enjoys the ever so popular square-inside-a-round-case shape. The brand began its life as a movement manufacturer originally, and even though it has a reputation of somewhat of an haute horlogerie watchmaker, Piaget doesn’t have the fame of the fabled Holy Trinity of watch brands. Let this not detract from the brand’s excellent sports-centric watches in their Polo collection, which so far weren’t exactly teeming with complications; barring the chronograph models in the collection. But with 2023 as our witness, things are changing. Piaget has just integrated a perpetual calendar into its Polo family of ultra-thin watches, namely the Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, also featuring a moon phase display.
Shape-wise, it’s the same retro-chic cushion-shaped case that gave the Polo collection its popularity. The brushed and polished stainless steel case with a flat round bezel measures 42mm in diameter and 8.65mm in height, consistent with Piaget’s penchant for ultra-thin watches. Sapphire crystals protect the dial and the caseback with 30m water resistance.
The dial is in gorgeous dark emerald green color with a gadroons pattern accompanied by applied faceted markers on the inner flange. The register at 3 o’clock provides the date display, 9 o’clock for the weekday, month at 12 o’clock and a tiny leap year indicator is integrated into the month sub-dial as well. Completing the dial package is the moon phase window at 6 o’clock and a flat ring with a “perpetual calendar” designation and the “Piaget” text logo inside the circle. The hour and minute hands and the hour indices are coated with Super-LumiNova.
Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is powered by the ultra-thin 1255P movement which has only 4mm in height. The 25 jewels movement with an off-centered micro-rotor operates at 21,600 vibrations/hour and offers 42 hours of power reserve. Delivered on a brushed and polished H-shaped stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp, the bracelet has the new interchangeable SingleTouch system for easy bracelet replacement. There’s also a green rubber strap with an easy interchangeability system, the bracelet and strap both have variations of the gadroons pattern. Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is part of the permanent collection with an MSRP of EUR 60,500.
