If I suddenly say “watchmaking” then the country Finland won’t instantly spring to mind exactly. Rightfully so, however it has its share of interesting microbrands. The microbrands are often known to take bold risks, trying new things, and often delivering exceptional value. Enter J&Berg, a newcomer to the scene with their debut model, the B2. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
Tool watches are supposed to be functional, rugged, and devoid of unnecessary frills. They’re the kind of watches you can wear while fixing a car, hiking a mountain, or doing anything that involves getting your hands dirty. The B2, on the other hand, seems to be aiming for a more refined, contemporary look. These are the aesthetics, but at its core, it’s made of Grade 5 titanium, which is a good choice for a tool watch due to its strength and lightness, thus it stays true to the tool watch archetype. The case measures 38.5mm in diameter by 10.4mm thick, which is a decent size for a modern watch. It’s got a sandblasted finish, which gives it a bit of texture. The screw-down crown and case back, gives it a decent 100-meter water resistance.
The dial is where things get interesting. It’s a sandwich dial, meaning there are two layers. The more reflective bottom layer comes in three colors: turquoise, copper, and dark brown. The top layer is black with cutouts for the hour markers. The lume, by the way, is Super-LumiNova BGW9, which is a good choice for visibility in low-light conditions. The white minute markers printed on the black upper dial layer creates a sharp contrast boosting legibility. Overall, the dial is clean and legible and the color options give the user a decent selection of colorways to choose from.
Powering the B2 is a Miyota 9039 movement. It’s a solid choice for a watch in this price range. It’s reliable, accurate, and widely used, and the 42-hour power reserve is decent.
The watch comes on a gray canvas strap with a leather lining coupling with the titanium pin buckle. The B2 is priced at €475 or USD $521 (excluding taxes and shipping).
