California here we come; one might exclaim that if a fan of Alpina or California dials as Alpina has once again made headlines with its latest release, the Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic California Dial. This rugged outdoor adventure model has been a favorite among enthusiasts, and its recent makeover with a California dial is set to capture even more hearts.

The Alpiner Extreme Automatic boasts a distinctive 41mm cushion-shaped case with a thickness of 11.5mm. This watch is engineered for durability, and thus the case features protective bumpers on both sides and a screw-down rubber-clad crown for optimal grip, along with an impressive 200m water resistance. The angular case and fixed bezel secured by six triangular head screws exhibit a sporty yet polished aesthetic. A sapphire crystal protects the dial and offers clear legibility, while a display caseback provides a glimpse into the intricate workings of the movement.

The standout feature is definitely the California dial. Originating in the 1930s for error-proof readability, this style combines Roman (X, XII, I, and II) and Arabic numerals (4-8). Dashes at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock complete the unique configuration. Against a matte, grainy black backdrop, the dial is visually striking and highly legible. Vintage beige luminescence on all indices and hands adds a retro touch, complemented by the red Alpina triangle counterweight on the central seconds hand and a functional date window at 3 o’clock.

Powering the Alpiner Extreme Automatic California Dial is the Caliber AL-525, a self-winding movement based on the Sellita SW200. This robust movement operates at a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz) and provides a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The custom black rotor is asymmetrically cut out to resemble Alpina’s triangular logo.

An integrated-looking black two-piece rubber strap, textured for a sporty look, seamlessly complements the Alpiner Extreme Automatic California Dial. The strap’s semi-integrated lugs ensure a smooth transition from case to strap, while the deployant-style clasp with a double push-button release provides secure and convenient fastening. The Alpiner Extreme Automatic California Dial is available for purchase online at Alpina’s website, with deliveries expected by the end of November 2023. Priced at CHF 1,595.
