Panerai’s Radiomir family is seeing the addition of a new family member. The new Radiomir 8 days aka PAM00992 is a vintage-inspired watch that is influenced by an old Panerai from the 1930s, sports a 45mm case and is powered by a modern in-house movement with an 8-day power reserve.
Presented in black with a nice Matt finish, the dial has a familiar Panerai aesthetic. It features a sandwich-style construction with batons and bold Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 that have been cut out to expose a layer of superluminova sitting beneath. This gives the dial a sense of depth and helps emit a strong and long-lasting glow making it easy to read the time in dimly lit situations. At 9 o’clock is a subsidiary seconds register, and in a thoughtful move to maintain the symmetry and balance of the dial, at 3 is the text “8 GIORNI BREVETTATO” that indicates the 8-day power reserve this watch offers. One of my favorite detail on this dial are the thermally blued hands that add a nice pop of the color to the watch and akin to the overall lume application have been filled with custard colored luminous paint to evoke a vintage vibe.
The case on the PAM00992 measures a large 45mm in diameter and is crafted from AISI 316 L aged steel to give it a patinated appearance. Another nod to the past is the wired lug structure that was a common sight on military watches during World War 1. At 3 o’clock is a crown that screws down to ensure the 100-meter water resistance and unlike many Panerai watches is devoid of the brand’s signature crown protection system. Sitting on the front is a plexiglass crystal whereas the case back features a sapphire window giving a nice view of the powerhouse behind this watch.
Driving the PAM00992 is Panerai’s in-house caliber P.5000. This is a hand-wound movement that operates at a frequency of 3Hz and offers an autonomy of 8 days through two barrels. The movement comprises 21 jewels and features a nice industrial finish.
The new PAM00992 is a bold and handsome timepiece that offers a blend of vintage looks and modern technology. The watch would come attached to a brown calf strap with beige contrast beige stitching and would retail for EUR 8,300.
