Post-Baselworld 2018: Sinn 836 Pilot Watch

By Jovan Krstevski

Baselworld was remarkable as always and so is the Sinn 836, adding to the brand’s 3 hand model lineup. While the familiar design is reminiscent of previous Sinn models particularly the 556 and the 856, the new pilot watch now settles on a larger case size at 43 mm. Of course, we see the same tasty Sinn accouterments on the new watch.

In my humble opinion, there is nothing fancy with this release so savvy buyers rushing to get a piece is highly unlikely unless of course, it is the general crowd which is really the demographic target of this Sinn release. However, if you like the simplicity of the 556 or 856 yet find them too small, the Sinn 836 is a perfect alternative. Wile being large at 43 mm, it is balanced by a slimmer 10.5 mm profile ensuring a comfortable wear for a daily driver. For non-watch guys, this is the perfect watch boasting of a reliable mechanical movement.

Speaking of the movement, powering the watch is the ETA–2892-A2 beating at 28,800 bph and yields 42 hours of power reserve. It is not very long but enough to do the job. The 43 mm case is also made of tegimented steel which is virtually scratch-proof and is finished with a satinized look. It is good to know that the brand does not skimp on the materials and knowing the nature of a nickel-free case, certainly it is very tough.

Personally, I like the simple nature of the watch and if you have been following me, you would expect me to love this watch, and I do. The legibility is superb and I like the red seconds hand for absolute precision. The indices are nothing fancy complemented by rhodium coated skeletonized hour and minute hands with a matt-brushed finish. The design is practical yet very sporty. The sapphire crystal adds more vibrance and protection completing the superb 100 m water resistance of the watch. You would certainly get your hands wet sometimes or probably spill drinks on the watch but the 836 would not care.

Finally, the nice 836 wears on either a leather strap or a steel bracelet. Price is set at $1,790 on a strap and $2,050 on a bracelet. The new pilot watch is certainly geared for customers looking for a larger three-hand alternative. For more info, visit Sinn online.
