In 2019 TAG Heuer commemorated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Monaco chronograph by launching a variety of limited-edition tribute watches corresponding to each decade of the watch’s existence. And now as the brand completes 160 years, it is once again celebrating in style by introducing the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 years Silver Limited Edition, a close to original modern reproduction of the reference 2774S from the 1960s.
The Carrera 2447S – 1964
In case you did an image search on the Internet simply typing the words ‘TAG Heuer 2447S’, you would come across many stunning pictures of a 3 register vintage silver dial chronograph. And the moment you compare to it to the watch pictured above you would understand the impressive job TAG has done here. The new 160 years Silver limited edition still features a beautiful sunburst silver dial with three sunken registers at 3,6 and 9, applied faceted hour markers, baton-style hands and a 60 minute/seconds track on the outer periphery. In all, its a beautiful and highly legible dial just like its vintage inspiration.
While TAG has created a watch that is visually similar to its retro inspiration, the brand has taken some measures to make it more relevant to modern times. First up, let’s talk about the case. Once again, the overall silhouette remains quite familiar featuring a round case, faceted angular lugs, pump-style pushers, a nicely knurled crown, and a polished bezel. But the size has now been increased from 36mm to 39mm, a great size that should easily cater to a wide variety of wrists. On the front is a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that replaces the acrylic crystal on the vintage reference and even the back on this new watch has a sapphire window that gives a great view of the movement, which is perhaps the biggest difference between the two watches.
While the original is as powered by the popular Valjoux 72, the new TAG Heuer Carrera 160 years Silver Limited Edition Watch is driven by Tag’s in-house automatic B02 caliber. This is a modern column wheel-based chronograph movement that operates at a frequency of 4Hz and offers an impressive power reserve of around 72 hours. The movement has been beautifully decorated and has been equipped with a skeletonized black Rotor that has been embellished with a motif celebrating the brand’s 160th anniversary.
In the end, I would like to say that the new TAG Heuer Carrera 160 years Silver Limited Edition Watch is a great watch that brings an important piece of the brand’s history back into the limelight. The watch would come attached to a black leather strap and would retail for CHF 6,300.
