The Chronomaster Original, an evolution of the iconic A386 from Zenith’s 1969 trilogy, has always been synonymous with the El Primero high-frequency chronograph movement. This timepiece, characterized by its round-shaped case, is celebrated for its distinctive tricolor sub-counters, which have become an emblem of the brand. Now, Zenith introduces a bold twist by replacing the traditional silvery-white dial with a striking black backdrop, breathing new life into this timeless classic.
The round case of the Chronomaster Original, measuring 38mm in diameter and with a modest thickness of 12.9mm, remains true to the original A386 design. It features sharp faceted lugs, pump-style pushers, and a blend of radial-brushed and polished surfaces. The absence of a traditional bezel gives the watch a unique and captivating appearance, while the raised, domed sapphire crystal adds an extra touch of elegance. The watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the black tricolor dial. It’s a departure from the conventional white, featuring the classic blue, gray, and silver snailed subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, providing a striking contrast against the black backdrop.. The switch to a darker palette necessitated changes, such as reversing the colors of the 1/10th of a second, and 10-second chronograph scales and altering the date window to feature a black background, accentuating the dial’s visual impact.
At the heart of the Chronomaster Original beats Zenith’s prized El Primero caliber – the El Primero 3600. This automatic movement boasts a column wheel and horizontal coupling, beating at a high frequency of 5Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour). It offers precise 1/10th of a second indications and a 60-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire display window, the movement’s contemporary architecture with a blue column wheel and openworked star-shaped rotor is revealed.
The Zenith Chronomaster Original with the black tricolor dial is available with a stainless steel bracelet or a black calfskin leather strap, both featuring a folding clasp. This timepiece is now a permanent addition to Zenith’s collection, with a price of CHF 9,900 on the steel bracelet and CHF 9,400 on the black calfskin strap.
