Audemars Piguet introduced an entirely new collection of watches called the Code 11.59 during SIHH 2109. While it was great to see the brand step out of the shadows of the Royal Oak, the new Code 11.59 watches somehow did not strike a chord with the watch fraternity. For Only Watch 2019, the brand has decided to stay with the Code 11.59 collection and has given its most complicated watch, the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked a unique two-tone flavor.
One of the more interesting aspects of Code 11.59 watches is their case design. Featuring relatively simpler looking upper/lower sections, an octagonal mid-section, and skeletonized lugs, the case is an intriguing mix of shapes and manages to make a bold but refined statement. It has been nicely finished just as an Audemars Piguet should be and features some really sharp polished lines that seamlessly integrate with the finely brushed surfaces. While the dimensions on the Only watch 2019 Code 11.59 Openworked Tourbillon are the same as the Gold version, the brand has made some interesting material choices here. The Octagonal center has been made from 18k rose gold whereas the rest of the case is crafted from white gold, giving the watch its two-tone look and a distinctive visual appeal.
The architectural aesthetic of the case is complemented well by the face of the watch which showcases the artistic side of the brand. As this watch is all about the highly skeletonized movement, most of the dial has been taken away except for the outer flange which features a printed minute track for enhanced readability. The exposed sections of the hand wound Caliber 2948 have been expertly carved out and have been beautifully finished. Continuing with the two-tone theme the Tourbillon and the barrel bridges have been highlighted in a pink gold color whereas the rest of the movement has been rhodium plated to match the white gold exterior. The movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 bph and offers a healthy power reserve of around 80 hours.
The Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 is a great example of horological art and the fact that only one would ever be made in this bi-colored arrangement makes this Only Watch 2019 edition a true collector’s item. The watch would come attached to a genuine black alligator strap and would be auctioned at the Only watch event slated to be held on November 9, 2019.
