Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite Midnight Blue Watch

BY JOVAN KRSTEVSKI

Back in 2018, German brand Glashütte Original introduced a steel version of its GMT offering the Senator Cosmopolite. And now, the brand is back with a cool new variation of the Cosmopolite that features a blue dial and presents a contemporary take on a classic watch.

As compared to the dressy and traditional 2018 Senator Cosmopolite, this new version brings forth a few noteworthy modern updates. First and foremost is the striking deep blue dial that looks a lot more vibrant and livelier than the current while dial offering. The dial also gets a nice sunburst finish which means that it would offer some nice color transitions depending on how light falls on it, making it more versatile. The next major change comes in the form of a new hour index and handset. Where the existing version of the watch features a combination of elegant blued leaf-shaped hands and Arabic numerals, the new 2020 Senator Cosmopolite gets applied batons for hours and a more casual looking hour and minute hands. Furthermore, the hands and the markers have also been filled with luminous paint which gives the watch a slightly sportier look and would also help with low light visibility. The rest of the dial remains quite familiar with a second time-zone cum power-reserve subdial at 12, a big date display at 4, a big subsidiary seconds dial at 6, daylight saving and standard time windows at 8, and a day/night indicator at 9.

Moving to the case, you still get a stainless-steel round body that measures 44mm in diameter and has a thickness of around 14mm. As the dimensions suggest this is a large watch, but given the amount of information on offer, the size does seem appropriate. The case presents a nice amalgam of brushed and polished surfaces and is flanked by three crowns to control the different functions. Water-resistance is limited to just 50 meters.

Driving the watch is Glashütte Original’s in-house calibre 89-02. This is an automatic movement that operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers a healthy autonomy of around 3 days when fully wound. The movement can be viewed through the sapphire case back and has been exquisitely decorated. It features Glashütte three-quarter plate with stripe finish screw balance with 4 adjustment screws, beveled edges, and a skeletonized rotor with a 21ct gold oscillating weight.

The new Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite Blue (Reference: 1-89-02-05-02-01) is available to purchase on either a Blue Louisiana alligator leather strap or a stainless-steel bracelet with prices starting at EUR 20,700.
