Yesterday saw the Only Watch auction take place, the bi-annual charity auction where watch brands submit a one-off piece to be auctioned and the funds donated towards research into one of the most dangerous and common forms of Muscular Dystrophy: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Well, there you have it, the results of all 50 lots from this year’s auction. Most of the lots on sale at least met their expected price, perhaps the most unexpected lot that didn’t meed the estimate was Ferdinand Berthoud’s FB 1 – Night Star watch, which I think was a cracker. Of all the watches, though, the Oculus 1297 Only Watch was the furthest under its expected price, selling for CHF26,000 less than the estimated price. That’s not great for the charity, but it’s great for whoever bought it as they got a tourbillon watch with a cool case from an indie brand for a low price.
The main headliner of the auction, as ever, was Patek Philippe, which pulled in a record-breaking CHF31,000,000, obliterating the last record price from the 2017 Only Watch auction, which was CHF6,200,000. I expected it to be over CHF10,000,000 simply because it was an extremely rare model of Patek Philippe’s (the Grandmaster Chime) in a steel case, which always fetches them more. Other highlights include the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic One which surprised (and baffled) a lot of folks. Breguet did rather well on their Type 20. Previously, they’ve made their Only Watch submissions the prototype for their production watches (think the Type XXI 3817ST/X2/3ZU, that watch started as an Only Watch one-off), so with rumours of a range refresh incoming this could be the future of the Type XX range. Personally, I can’t wait to see how far the money raised from this auction will go!
