Wrist Review’s Watch Buyer’s Guide for Holidays 2014

Group 4. $60,000 to $95,000

Zenith Montre D’aréonef Type 20 Tourbillon

It’s a solid gold Zenith chronograph tourbillon and it’s only $69,000. That is a big saving given that a tourbillon watch would usually sell for $150,000 or more. Don’t be fooled into thinking that something must be wrong with this watch either as Zenith is a very well respected company and the largest watch company that makes everything under one roof. This watch has large, luminous hands and Arabic numerals which Zenith watches are known for. Also, Zenith watches are known for having a cutaway in the dial so you can see the movement and this has one too, except you can view the tourbillon. This automatic tourbillon chronograph would make an ideal addition to any collection, especially if it’s a pilot oriented one.

Roger Dubuis Velvet

This is a ladies’ watch of the royal kind. It’s a solid precious metal, in this instance it’s gold, with diamonds in the bezel and the golden bracelet. This is also a simple watch which only shows seconds and hours. However, it is an automatic watch and is 30m water-resistant. The most striking feature of the watch is the hour markers which are similar to those on the Cartier mentioned above. The stretch outwards from the tonneau shaped indent in the middle of the watch which holds the name, hands and made in Geneva text on it. This is purely poetry on the wrist for close enough to $77,000.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Solid Gold Chronograph Date

Nothing tells people to move out of your way like gold, especially if the whole watch is made of it. If it’s on a bracelet then it can’t get more classy and sophisticated than this Audemars Piguet chrono. The watch is a beautiful colour with the rose gold making up the case, bracelet, automatic rotor and the dial which has it’s own unique squared pattern to it. There’s also a contrasting black ring inside the bezel, the sub dials are in black as well as the hands, crown, chronograph pushers and date. The hands and numerals also have a small amount of lume on them so it can just about be read in the dark. Because this watch is pretty new, you’re ahead of the trend with it. Prices may vary but $80,500 is expected.

Breguet Classique 5717BRAS/9ZU Limited Edition

This is a super elegant Breguet dress watch. I could leave it there as that would be enough for some, but I shan’t. This watch has it’s own small claim to fame as it’s the first watch ho have a date window, city time zone ring and a moonphase that are all synchronised. That means that when you change cities, not only do the hands move but the moonphase and date window will move as well. Breguet will also put the continent that the watch will be sold in onto the dial as a backdrop, in case you forget which continent you’re in. In this example, we can see Asia and Oceana but others are available. This dress watch also hasn’t suffered from BezelBulging, like the Villeret in Group 2 which is nice to see. It retails for $89,000 but hurry as it’s a limited edition watch.
