Introducing The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Luna Negra Watches

Handsome Swiss watches with a rich Cuban history.

Cuervo y Sobrinos is a Swiss watch brand with rich Cuban roots dating back to 1882. The brand’s Historiador collection is a compilation of vintage-inspired timepieces that are influenced by the old historic Cuervo y Sobrinos references from the 1950s. The latest addition to this family are the visually compelling Luna Negra timepieces. Let’s have a quick look.

The Luna Negra is a watch that has been designed to grab the wearer’s attention, offer a ton of attention and detail at many different levels. Let’s begin by talking a little about the dial. Offered in anthracite or sand color the face on the Luna Negra is rich, detailed, and informative. Wrapped in an intricate “Clou de Paris” guilloche pattern, the dial emits a striking ornate vibe and showcasing depth and dimensionality. Sitting on top of the face are sharp, faceted applied hour markers that are surrounded by a contrasting minute track, followed by the 31 days of the month printed on the outer periphery. Stacked at the center of the dial are four hands which include elegant Breguet style hour and minute hands, a baton-style seconds hand and finally a tapering a red crescent tipped hand to read the date. Positioned above the hand stack are two displays for the day of the week and month of the year, whereas sitting below is the moon phase display. Adding further visual intrigue are the cutouts on the left and the right that expose the day and date disks and some mechanical internals. And while the execution is worth praising, I do feel that the dial lacks a little on legibility front.

The case like the dial looks quite distinctive and is my favorite detail on this watch. Machined from stainless steel the case measures 40mm in diameter with a thickness of around 11.25mm making it quite wearable. However, what steals the show here are those long angular lugs that lend the watch an art deco look and presence. The case is fully polished and is water-resistant to a paltry 30 meters.

Turning the watch over reveals the mechanical engine that powers this watch. The caliber CYS 6331 is an automatic movement that is based on the ETA 2892-A2 and has an additional Dubois Dépraz module. The movement comprises 31 jewels and offers an autonomy of around 42 hours. The movement has been nicely decorated using perlage and a black rotor with golden stars.

The new Luna Negra watches would come attached to a black or tan Louisiana leather strap depending upon the dial color. Both models are limited to just 88 pieces and would retail for USD 7,250.
