German brand Mühle Glashütte is best known for making highly capable tool watches. One of the brand’s popular references is the SAR rescue timer, a watch that was designed to accompany sea rescuers who help seafarers in distress. The first S.A.R Rescue Timer was consigned to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Society (DGRS) in 2002, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this association, Mühle Glashütte has released a limited-edition solid gold version of the SAR Rescue Timer.

Since its genesis, one of the biggest draws of the S.A.R Rescue Timer has been its distinctive case design. From the offset crown at 4 to the blocky rounded lug extensions, to the rubberized bezel on top, everything combines to make this watch stand out from the crowd. While the case shape remains unchanged, the new Rescue Timer Gold uses solid gold instead of stainless steel for its case construction. The use of 18K yellow gold lends the watch warmth and exclusivity and adds some heft to the case compared to the regular steel model. The 42mm case remains water-resistant to 1000 meters however the crown this time around has been black PVD coated.

The dial, like the case, looks familiar but comes with a few small but noteworthy updates. The face still uses printed rectangles and oversized triangles at the four quadrants for hours and hash marks asking with printed numerals at intervals of five for minutes. A circular date window with cyclops is placed at 4, but the circular border in this instance has been presented in a gold-tone. Similarly, the baton-style hour and minute hands along with the arrow-tipped second’s hand, have been crafted from yellow gold and offer a nice contrast to the black background.

The engine inside this watch is the trustworthy Sellita SW-200 that has been slightly modified by the brand and features a customized rotor and a woodpecker neck regulator. The movement operates at 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of around 38 hours. The movement is hidden behind a closed case back that has also been PVD coated like the crown.

The new Mühle Glashütte S.A.R Rescue Timer Gold watch is limited to just 20 pieces. The watch retails for EUR 13,500 and comes attached to a custom black rubber strap.
